I AM

Doug Solstad

And I'm running for
St. George City Council

Why I'm Running

People have asked me why I'm running for city council. Quite simply, I just want to serve! I learned to appreciate service while growing up in a military family, and I love to give back. I want to help my fellow citizens, to help keep our city the beautiful place we love, and to contribute to this city that means so much to me and my family.

Issues

Transportation

As our city continues to grow, transportation is on everyone's mind. I want to make sure we keep our roads safe, maintain the roads in good condition, and take advantage of opportunities to increase public transit to help relieve congestion.

Housing

Families should not have to work multiple jobs to be able to afford a house. Home ownership is part of the American dream. I will work with staff to continue to explore design and functional options to help make owning a home more affordable for the citizens of our city.

Growth

Our city population is close to 100,000, and growth will continue significantly in the coming years. We need to plan now for that growth so we are prepared for the future.

Business

I want to help simplify and reduce existing municipal codes to make it easier for companies to do business. Owners should be able to easily identify what are the requirements placed upon their businesses.

Arts

A significant piece of our community culture comes from the arts. As a patron and donor I support the arts and their development for all citizens, youth and adults.

Economic Development

The best way to increase wages in St. George is to recruit to our area businesses that pay more. I will use my experience to make sure our business environment is inviting and supports our city goals.

My Philosophy

My philosophy about service is simple.

Understand.  Serve.  Repeat.
Understand. It has been said that "all of us are smarter than any of us." None of us can know everything we need to know about everything. But when we work together we can bring together that knowledge. I like to listen, to collaborate with others, and to gather pieces of the puzzle. My professional training as a CPA (Certified Public Accountant) has helped me to learn how to analyze information and situations to find the best solution. As my understanding grows, I am in a better position to help.

Serve. With a greater understanding of the situation I am ready to address the needs by moving forward and making a difference. I've had a lot of opportunities to serve, and I know I still have plenty to give. I've listed below some of the service opportunities I've had that have helped me prepare for a position on our city council.

Repeat. Move on to the next project or situation to start over and do it all again.

My Experience

I am a CPA and a small business owner. I have enjoyed the opportunities I have had over the last 20 years to make a difference, and enjoy giving back. Here is a list of some of the things I'm doing or have done.
